Duane D Burkholder

Duane D. Burkholder, age 88 of Germantown passed away peacefully on January 5, 2023 at Kettering Medical Center.  He was born in Mentor, OH to the late Howard and Audrey Burkholder and went to Ohio University after graduation before being drafted into the US Army.  After his service in the Army, he returned to OU where he finished is Bachelor's degree.  Duane retired from Valley View High School after 33 years of teaching, during those years he taught science, was an advisor and started the science and chess clubs.  During those 33 years, he continued his own education by obtaining 2 Master's degrees in Science, one from Wright State University and one from Miami of Ohio.  Duane loved talking to people and sharing his knowledge just as much as he enjoyed learning.  When he wasn't teaching, he was reading, spending time with his family and grandchildren, or getting creative with his bansai trees.  Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Shirley (Perrine) Burkholder, his grandson Aaron Lakes, and his sister Carol Javins.  He is survived by his daughters Linda (Nathan) Jones, Rebecca (Robert) Mitchell, Kelly (Tom) Lakes, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grand children, his sister Susie White, as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends.  Services will be private for the family and and Duane will be laid to rest next to his wife, Shirley at the Germantown Union Cemetery.

**The family asks that no flowers or trees be purchased, but suggests donations be made to Brookdale Oakwood Senior Living,  1701 Far Hills Ave, Dayton OH  45419 in memory of Duane.
